Route 66 News Odell Station in miniature | | Willem Bor, a resident of the Netherlands who has created miniature versions of Route 66 landmarks, has finished a new one — the historic Odell Station in Odell, Ill., in 1/25th scale. Bor even made a miniature of the travel trailer that sits next to it. More of Bor’s work can be seen here, here, [...] | | 2/5/2012 10:47:23 AM |

Route 66 News The legendary blizzard of 1956 | | I stumbled today onto this story in the The Courier of Montgomery County, Texas, about a freak blizzard that struck the Plains of New Mexico and Texas on Feb. 4, 1956. The storm blanketed snow from Amarillo to the north, Tucumcari, N.M., to the west, and Wink to the south. Even El Paso got 5 [...] | | 2/4/2012 3:48:41 PM |
Route 66 News El Garces makes slow progress | | It’s been slow, but the Needles (Calif.) Desert Star reported this week that the effort to restore and eventually reopen the historic El Garces hotel, restaurant, and railroad depot in Needles is making progress. While you are traveling down Routs 66, make it a point to stop in Shamrock, TX. We have several sights to see. We have the famous Conoco Tower Station and U Drop In, which was featured in the movie "Cars". There is an onsite gift shop and visitor's center. It is located at the corner of Rt. 66 (12th street) and highway 83. There are several old buildings along Rt. 66, most of which are run down, sadly. Then head down toward the water tower, recently designated as a Texas Historical Sight. Our water tower has been boasted as Texas' tallest water tower. We are in the process of creating a visitors' park right below the water tower, which will display the history and old photos of the water tower. If you turn east at 2nd street (signal light at downtown) and go 1 block to Madden street, there is the Magnolia gas station and the Pioneer West Museum. Across the street is the Ziegler House, where one of the area's first doctors practiced and lived. Head south on Madden to 1st street, and turn east one block to Houston to see Shamrock's own peice of the Blarney Stone, and kiss it for good luck. We have several restaurants and new hotels (Best Western and Sleep Inn), with 2 more hotels under construction. Be sure to visit during our St. Patrick's Day celebration. Enjoy your visit!

On my first trip in 2003 they were still renovating the U Drop In. I can't wait to see it this summer when I ride the Route again.
